Coming up soon is the Kelly McMichael edition of Songs We Write, Covers We Love. Kelly has an indie-synth-pop-rock band called Kelly McMichael and the Gloss. They just released a new record a little under a year ago called LIMINAL. First time I heard Kelly she was singing and playing the crap out of Bonnie Raitts “Nick of Time”. You can hear her music with the Gloss at the link above there, and come and hear us do our acoustic version of it all on Thurs JULY 3 at the TRANZAC Club. Guest band TBA but expect, as per usual, an influx of vocalities and harmony ish.

Wow. What a night. Collaborating with Devon was a total pleasure. And our band, Bret Higgins, Marshall Bureau, and Michael Eckert were on it and brought the songs to another level. Having the opportunity to work with people like this is the reason why I play music in the first place, and is certainly a hope and joy-giver in a time where playing/creating music for a living can be continually questionable!
Onward to the next show – July 3rd! With this one —> Kelly McMichael - who just recently moved (back?) to Toronto from St. Johns, Newfoundland. I first heard Kelly when she totally slayed Bonnie Raitts’ “Nick of Time”. She then proceeded to do the same to Sheryl Crows music, and recently Jann Arden. Whew… looking forward to the covers brainstorming session…..Wait till you hear her original music Stay tuned. xo And we’re back……and so happy to be back in good company.
Songs We Write, Covers We Love is hitting the Tranzac once again, and will continue to do so throughout the summer and fall. First Thursday of every month. This time I am delighted to be sharing the stage with Devon Sproule. I first heard about Devon when her record dropped here in Canada (COLOURS with Mike O’Neill) and have since developed a fan crush by watching her sing on youtube (Youtube… where all serious musicians do our most serious work). She is a unique songwriter who’s honesty, strong lines and raw melody shines clear in her writing, me-thinks. She’s based out of Austin, Texas and is in Toronto to do another show, and quite kindly made lots of time to do this show too. I’ve had a blast communicating back and forth with her and we’re really looking forward to collaborating on June 12 together. Here is a little info about this fabulous dame as of late.. Devon’s last record, Colours, was produced at 6 Nassau in Toronto by Sandro Perri and is a collaboration w/ fellow Ontarian Mike O’Neill and a band featuring members of Toronto r’n'b soothers Bernice. “Sproule’s quirky affectations bring to mind Bjork, and forays into the dark, Michelle Shocked.” – Village Voice And our band? These guys are fab. Bret Higgins (Great Lake Swimmers) on bass Marshall Bureau (Jill Barber, Barzin) on drums Michael Eckert (The Treasures, Rucksack Willies) on guitars One set. 10pm. PWYC. We’ll play songs by Devon and I, and our favourite guilty-pleasure cover songs. Come a bit early to get a seat. http://www.devonsproule.com/ http://www.michellewillis.ca/ Mich xo |
