Wee bit stressed about the holidays? “Holidays” ?? Well, if you are in the city and need a small escape, here are a few shows with some wildly talented, soulful and creative artists for your shopping-mall-crushed heart before the year is through. Best part? All of these shows are either free or PWYC. You’re welcome!

This Weekend….. The Measure - Christmas Special!

DATE: Sat, December 21
TIME: Doors at 7:30pm, Showtime 8pm
COVER: PWYC
WITH SPECIAL GUESTS: The Lovelocks!

Debuting NEW songs + Christmas beauts. Think more Donny Hathaway and Mariah Carey, and less Andrews Sisters and ol’ Bingy. We’ll have our CDs for sale. A nice gift for the folky in your family. See the blue poster to the right for show details.

Songs We Write, Covers We Love

I’m starting off 2014 with my series and a true gem of a music maker, Thom Gill. Thom played at the first show I did with Bernice, and I knew immediately that I wanted to do a show featuring just him. I have yet to hear a guitar player that plays the way he does. Here’s a bit about him:

“Placing a disarming sincerity and vulnerability amidst a peculiar array of stylistic cues, …imaginative melodic-harmonic tics, and lyrics that express a rather complicated relationship with spirituality, religious iconography, and love,” (Musicworks magazine) Gill’s solo project THOMAS may interest you.

Toronto’s Thom Gill has been busy appearing in many forms and furnishing a variety of vibes, exploring the world of song, at home and abroad, with blissfully confused audiences. His commitment to how sound and song participate in life, and vice versa, leads him in fresh directions with each performance. As well as his work as a solo artist, Thom has performed alongside Owen Pallett, John Southworth, Katie Stelmanis (Austra), and Devon Sproule, to name a few.

Our show together is Thursday January 2, 2014. Inside the Tranzac Club (292 Brunswick Ave, Southern Cross Room). 10pm. 1 set only.

Jacobs & Co

Come by this Sunday evening (6:30-9:30) or Monday (same) and yell requests at me while sampling a $400 steak. No… I’m not kidding. I’ll also be there on New Years Eve before they ring in the New Year.

That’s it for now. All the warmest wishes for you and your families here and abroad. Lets all try to drink a little more wine this year.
