I wrote last year that I wanted to put in the plans for my own solo project. That dream is slowly starting to be realized through meetings I’ve been having with Jonathan Goldsmith. I’ve worked with Jon on a couple of film scores he has composed, and I have always been amazed at – alongside his deep musicality – is his ability to perfectly articulate musical ideas and direction, or to conjure up an image for me to relate to in order to access the right sensibility. It’s a skill so important in studio and one I appreciate very much. His arrangements on Bruce Cockburns’ records are breathtaking, most notably for me “Beautiful Creatures”. He is a member of one of my favourite bands this city has ever produced, Nick Buzz. He has scored countless films and TV shows and remains one of the most respected names in Canadas film and tv industry. He has produced records for Bruce Cockburn, Hugh Marsh, Jenn Grant and more recently, Sarah Slean.
That being said, records are a big investment. My hopes are high and pockets somewhat empty. I plan to apply for grant funding, and will also look into sites like indiegogo.com as I think they are a brilliant way to connect to an audience and make music an involved experience. If you have any ideas about other ways to find investments, or if you yourself are looking to invest in a project like mine, I would love to talk with you and find ways to make it work.
